The Curtis Road bridge opened on Friday 2 October 2009. To mark the completion of the bridge construction students from Trinity College Gawler River, attended the site to learn about propagation for the expressway and plant a variety of shrubs on one of the roundabouts. The students were joined by Federal Member for Wakefield Mr Nick Champion MP, Member for Light, Mr Tony Piccolo MP, and Playford Mayor, Mr Martin Lindsell.
The site was originally proposed as a partial interchange, but is now a full interchange as an outcome of the community engagement process. Curtis Road is a key route for vehicles travelling to the suburbs of Macdonald Park, Andrews Farm, Davoren Park, Smithfield Plains and Munno Para Downs.
The interchange will improve road safety and has been a jobs boost for the area. Construction has involved 17,000 hours of work, including the construction of the pedestrian walkway.”
The second of fifteen bridges to open along the new Northern Expressway, Curtis Road interchange bridge comprises
• 750 m3 of concrete poured
• 110 tonnes of reinforcing steel
• 39, 3.2 tonne precast concrete barriers
• 17,000 Man hours
• Includes a Pedestrian walkway and 3m high throw screen
• Twelve, 58 tonne Precast Concrete Prestressed Beams
On July 28 2009, the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Hon Anthony Albanese and Premier Mike Rann officially opened the Angle Vale Bridge to traffic. This is a significant milestone on the project and is the first of fifteen bridges to be opened along the Northern Expressway.
Speed will be restricted to 40kph over the new bridge until the completion of ETSA works in approximately November 2009.
The Angle Vale bridge is a culmination of more than 15,000 hours of labour, and comprises 10 55-tonne concrete beams, 650 cubic metres of concrete, 100 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 26 pre-cast concrete barriers.
The Northern Expressway project contractor Fulton Hogan has recently installed a portable asphalt plant for the construction of this 23km of expressway. The state of the art Astec Hot Mix Asphalt facility includes Double Barrel technology, can manufacture asphalt incorporating up to 20% recycled material meaning significant cost and time saving to the project while being fuel efficient and eco-friendly.
March 13 2009 saw the Northern Expressway Team lay the first mix of asphalt on the Northern Expressway alignment.
The Asphalt plant is capable of producing 250 tonnes of asphalt per hour and it is anticipated that the laying crews will place up to 2000 tonnes per day. This will be a first in SA with approximately 450,000 tonnes of asphalt being placed on this project.
The Astec Hot Mix Asphalt facility has been supplied from the US and is fully portable, enabling the contractor to move it on to future projects at a later date.
For more detailed information on the Astec Hot Mix Asphalt facility please visit the Astec Website.

Community Open Day
December 7th 2008 saw the Northern Expressway site open up to the local community. From 10am to 2pm members of the public were invited to visit the Community Room to learn more about the project, view a drive-through animation and talk to project team members. Visitors were also given a unique opportunity to tour the construction site on guided bus tours. The site tour travelled along the alignment and to get up close to the construction works. The tour allowed people to get a better understanding of the huge scale of the project, see how far works have already progressed and see what is happening off the local road network. For younger visitors there were also various safety and construction activities as well as a temporary tattoo artist and sausage sizzle for the whole family.
The Open Day was a huge success with over 250 people from the local community in attendance. We anticipate another open day in late 2009.

The Northern Expressway Community Room
The Northern Expressway project team has established a community room at the Curtis Road site office. The community room acts as a class room for school groups with displays and activities about the environment, construction, the on site asphalt plant, community engagement, and employment. School groups can listen to presentations from the project team members on these topics, see and touch samples including plants and asphalt, take part in educational activities and learn about career opportunities in the Civil Construction Industry.
The Community room also provides the ideal space for meetings with local council, emergency services and other stakeholders.
If you would like to know more about the community room please contact the project team on 1300 658 621 or via email at northernexpressway@saugov.sa.gov.au
